Age

The minimum age requirement is 21 to work as a flight attendant.

Education
Do I need to take classes or go to school to be a flight attendant? The answer to that question is no. You can find “flight attendant schools” out there, but there is no need to pay the money to go through that. The airline you get hired on with will send you to their own training school which will last anywhere from 4-8 weeks. Training is very specific to each airline and their material cannot be purchased anywhere. **Heads up, some airlines might not pay you while you are in training, but at least there is no out of pocket training expenses for you.

Do I need a college degree to be a flight attendant?

Each airline is a little different, but most of them do not require a four year degree. Some airlines might like to see that you have some college education, but it is not a must. A high school diploma or GED is a must. There are a multitude of flight attendants out there who actually have a lot of education. I’ve seen everything from lawyers to engineers who were tired of their careers and quit their jobs to become flight attendants.

Experience

Most often times, no previous experience as a flight attendant is necessary. Do you have any experience in the customer service field? Great! That will be something we will highlight in your resume later on in this book. If you don’t have any customer service experience, don’t fret. There will be other ways to showcase how you’ve delivered service in the past or that your character is perfect for the job. A lot of flight attendants are hired straight out of college and this is their first “real” job.
Often times if you are applying for a corporate flight attendant position with a private company, they might require previous experience as a flight attendant. Corporate companies offer very specialized service to their customers at a very high class level.

Screening
Background Check
Airlines will conduct a thorough background check. You must pass this to continue on in the hiring process.

Finger Printing
Security is incredibly high when working for or dealing with an airline. You will be finger printed. Now a days, they have digital finger printing instead of having to use ink and paper to take you prints. It’s less messy!

Drug Testing
Drug tests are mandatory and you will be provided with directions on where and when the drug testing needs to take place. Drink lots of water the day of your drug test. You don’t want to have to return at a later date to take the test again.

Language
Check with your airline to see what the language requirements. Any airline based in the U.S will require you to be able to read, speak and understand English. Some airlines may be looking for bilingual people. If you are bilingual, you may be able to apply for their translator programs

Translator Programs
Can you read, speak and understand another language? If your airline flies to a destination where your second language is spoken, they may require at least one flight attendant on board that speaks the language of that destination. There may be additional compensation for this kind of position. You could be in high demand. There will be a test or an interview to ensure that you can speak the language fluently.

Citizenship
If you are working in the United States, being a citizen may not be a requirement. If you are not a citizen, then you’ll have to provide proof that you are eligible to work in this country. Before you get to the interview, it is a must that you have a valid passport. You will need this always at work.

If you are applying to an airline outof the United States, check with their visa or citizenship requirements.
